Alright, here it is, my Tygra fanart in all its finished glory. 3 days and way-too-many hours worth of work, and I hope it shows.
Okay, so for those who don’t know, Thundercats is getting a reboot on Cartoon Network. The two trailers released reveal little about the show, but it looks promising. The team behind it is impressive enough, including the director of several Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes (I’ve got a feeling it will be structured similarly), animation by Studio 4C, and what is hopefully a talented voice cast, since I’m only familiar with a couple. (Lion-O is Ron Stoppable. No idea how that is going to work.) Even though I hardly grew up with Thundercats, I’m pretty anxious to see how it all turns out.
…. and I guess now it’s time to admit that that’s the entire reason this fanart exists. (If you know me in real life/follow my main blog, you probably already know. In fact, I don’t think there’s any way you couldn’t know.) This is gift art for Matthew Mercer, who provides the voice of Tygra in the new show. If you remember either of my Anime Matsuri recaps, it’s pretty clear I’m a fan. He’s going to be at Anime Expo in the coming weeks and I wanted to make something for him to show my appreciation, and since Tygra marks a huge role for him (both as a VA and a nerd), I thought it would fit. Conveniently, his birthday is only a couple days before the convention, so I can pass it off as that rather than a random fan present.
I’m hoping he doesn’t somehow find it between now and when I give it to him at AX, because that would suck. That would really suck. This is a surprise, dammit.
As for the picture itself, I had fun with it. This marks the first major work I’ve done in Photoshop since… god, that huge Zelda fanart I never finished last summer. I tried to make it look as clean as possible but I should probably use the pen tool in the future for coloring/cell-shading. Tried my best to stick to the light source and I have no idea if I succeeded. You tell me.
